The v10 era technically started in 1995 when the fia limited engine displacement to 30 liters. Originally intended for the ligier formula one team this partnership collapsed without the engine being used in any races. In 1995 one of the greatest eras in formula one history began the era of the v10. It didnt peak however until 2000the same time bmw began supplying engines to williams f1.
Alfa romeo fitted the engine to two alfa romeo 164 pro car prototypes in 1998 however these cars also did not. The 845 hp at 18300 rpm v10 used in the 2003 ferrari f2003 ga was officially called the ferrari tipo 052.
